Week 6: Pastor Jeff's Thought of the Week: "Who Lives in the Christian?"

Pastor Jeff's Thought of the week

Week of March 20, 2017 - "Who Lives in the Christian?"

During one of the breaks at our Exchange Life Seminar this past Saturday, I was asked the following questions; Who indwells me the Holy Spirit or Jesus?   That is a good question that should be cleared up to avoid confusion and to give us a right focus on Christian living.

The New Testament repeatedly teaches that Jesus indwells believers:

  • Colossians 1:27 (NASB) 27  to whom God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
  • Galatians 2:20 (NASB) 20  "I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

The New Testament equally teaches that the Holy Spirit also indwells believers.  In fact the distinctive feature of the Holy Spirit’s ministry in the New Covenant is that He would permanently   indwell believers.

  • John 14:16-17 (NASB) 16  "I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; 17  that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.  Note in the Old Testament the Holy Sprit was with believers, but in the New Covenant after Jesus death, resurrection and glorification the Sprit would be given in a new way and would be in believers.
  • 1 Corinthians 6:19 (NASB) 19  Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?

So who indwells the believer, Jesus or the Holy Spirit?  If both do then it would seem crowded in our little bodies.  I think Romans 8:9 is a great help in clarifying this question.

  • Romans 8:9 (NASB) 9  However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.

In this verse, Paul teaches that a mark of a true Christian is that God’s Spirit indwells the believer in Jesus.  But in the next phrase the Holy Spirit is referred to as “The Spirit of Christ.”    So here Paul equates the Holy Spirit with Jesus’ person.   The Holy Spirit as the third person of the Trinity is co-equal with God the Father and the Lord Jesus.

Please just stop and think about this truth, the very divine person of Jesus Christ indwells you and all other believers via the indwelling Holy Spirit!   That is a grand truth that is designed to both encourage and empower your Christian life.   The reality of the very person of Jesus indwelling us by the Holy Spirit should move us to reorient our Christian living from self-effort to supernatural living by the power of the Holy Spirit.  And that is what the “Exchanged Life” is all about!

Rejoicing in Him,

Pastor Jeff
