Week 11: Pastor Jeff's Thought of the Week, "The Power of Acceptance - Part Two"

Pastor Jeff's Thought of the Week, "The Power of Acceptance – Part Two"

Week of May 1, 2017

In Part One of this series, we learned that our acceptance of God in Christ is the very foundation of our relationship with God (Eph 1:6)

However, many truly born again believers struggle to accept their acceptance.   Yes, they can quote John 3:16 and mentally assert that God loves them, but they are not sure if God accepts them.  Bob George in his book Classic Christianity puts it this way, “Love becomes practically meaningless apart from acceptance.” (page 98).

A very helpful path to accepting your acceptance is a fuller understanding of the doctrine of justification.   Some Bible teachers define justification as “just as if I had never seen."  Others say justification means “to declare righteous."  Thought justification is a declaration that a believer has been made right before God in Christ, it is much more than that!

If I walked into a room and put my harm around Joe and declared to everyone, “Joe is a millionaire”, that declaration by itself is not true. There is no objective reality behind it.   But if I first deposited one million dollars into Joe’s bank account and then make the declaration, “Joe is a millionaire," there is an objective basis for my declaration.   And that is exactly what God does.  Consider Romans 4:9-11 where Paul uses the example of Abraham being justified, by faith.

Romans 4:9-11 (HCSB) 9  Is this blessing only for the circumcised, then? Or is it also for the uncircumcised? For we say, Faith was credited to Abraham for righteousness. 10  In what way then was it credited—while he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while he was circumcised, but uncircumcised. 11  And he received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while still uncircumcised. This was to make him the father of all who believe but are not circumcised, so that righteousness may be credited to them also.

God did not declare Abraham righteous without an objective reality behind the declaration.   God credited righteousness to Abraham and that is the basis of the declaration.

When you believed on Jesus Christ, his very righteousness was credited to your spiritual account and because of that objective reality God declared you as righteous as Jesus because you really are!   So when you doubt your acceptance before God, because of old sins of the past or new sins of the present, realize that the issue of acceptance has been settled by the work of Christ in your life.  Say, "I can accept my acceptance before God not because I am good but because Jesus is perfect, and that perfect righteousness is in my account!”

Praise Him Now!
