Week 18: Pastor Jeff's Thought of the Week, "Competent Communication - Biblical Guidline #2"

Pastor Jeff's Thought of the Week, "Competent Communication- Biblical Guideline #2 - BE TRUTHFUL"
Week of June 26, 2017

When our old friend Pinocchio told a lie, his nose grew.  When we don’t speak truthfully, we undermine our character and destroy relationships.

That is why in this week’s thought we want to gain a grasp of the second biblical guideline of communication, “Be Truthful”. (Last week we were introduced to the first biblical guideline of good communication: "Be a Good Listener."  If you did not see that post I hope you can go back and read it.)

Nothing builds relationship more than trust, and nothing undermines relationships more than lying and dishonesty.  So the guideline of being truthful is very important in developing and maintaining all of our relationships.

The biblical guideline of being truthful emerges out of two verses in the Book of Ephesians Chapter 4:  Ephesians 4:15 (NASB) 15 but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ,

In contrast to the false teaching mentioned in Ephesians 4:14, Paul calls believers to speak truth in love.  That means we speak what is right and real out of a motivation for what is best for the other person.  You see we can speak truth to others but it may not be out of love for example, "I set him straight." or "I gave her a piece of my mind."  You may have spoken truth, but chances are with that attitude it was not done in love.   Now note the end of Ephesians 4:15, when we speak truth, what is right and real, out of a motivation of love, we help each other mature in Jesus.

A few verses further down in the chapter Paul revisits the guideline of speaking truthfully when he states in Ephesians 4:25Therefore, laying aside falsehood, SPEAK TRUTH EACH ONE of you WITH HIS NEIGHBOR, for we are members of one another“ (NASB).  Please note that this verse calls us to lay aside “falsehood."   Falsehood can come in the form of outright lies, omission, or exaggerations in our speech.  Any form of communication that is not right and real is falsehood

When Pinochio lied, his nose grew.  When we speak untruthfully we grow discord, disunity and distrust.  We destroy relationships!  Conversely when we speak truth, that which is right and real, out of Christ’s love, we build relationships within our families, church and our community.  So let’s, by the grace and love of God, always strive to speak truth to each other and grow relationships—and not noses.

In His Service,

Pastor Jeff
