Pastor Jeff's Thought of the Week - Competent Communication - Biblical Guideline #3

Over the last several weeks we have been touching upon the main biblical guidelines for competent communication.

From James 1:19 “Be quick to hear and slow to speak” we developed the first guideline; “Be Attentive”

From Ephesians 4:15 and 25 “Speak truth in Love," “laying aside falsehood speak truth” we gleaned the second guideline; “Be Truthful."

Using the sunset above as a clue, what third guideline of biblical communication can you craft from Ephesians 4:26-27?

Ephesians 4:26-27 (NASB) ... do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not give the devil an opportunity.

This third guideline can be labeled, “Keep Current." These verses teach that we should try to resolve issues with others in a timely manner. If we are upset, we should seek to speak with the other party and not allow the sun to go down on our anger. Verse 27 gives us a very negative consequence of not keeping current, we give the devil an opportunity. Literally the text says, we give him a foothold to advance in our life.

I know it is not always possible to resolve a problem immediately but our ideal goal is to to stay as current with others as possible. The following four questions have helped me to put this third guideline into practice:

1. Do I know and accept my responsibility to be current (Matt 5:22-23, 18:15)?

2. Do I consider my life before I go to speak to someone else (Matt 7:3-5)?

3. Do I consider the timing of my conversation (Prov. 25:11)?

4. Have I prayed for God’s help and wisdom in my words and approach (Prov. 3:5-6)?

I hope this third guideline; “Keep Current” will be great help in all of your relationships.

Praise Him Now!
Pastor Jeff
