Week 20: Pastor Jeff's Thought of the Week, "Competent Communication, Biblical Guideline #4 - Be Constructive"

Pastor Jeff's Thought of the Week - Competent Communication - Biblical Guideline #4

Over the last several weeks we have been touching upon the main biblical guidelines for competent communication.

  • From James 1:19 “Be quick to hear and slow to speak” we developed the first guideline; “Be Attentive”
  • From Ephesians 4:15 and 25 “Speak truth in Love”, “laying aside falsehood speak truth” we gleaned the second guideline; “Be Truthful."
  • From Ephesians 4:26-27 we developed the third guideline, “Be Current," seek to solve today’s conflicts before the sun goes down.

So here's a clue to our next guideline.  What does a plate of spoiled rotten food pictured below have to do with godly, biblical communication?

rotten food

Ephesians 4:29 will give us the answer....

Ephesians 4:29 (NASB) 29 Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.

Here Paul tells us to not let any unwholesome words come out of our months.  The New American Standard Bible has “rotten” in the margin as an alternate translation for the word “unwholesome."   This word is also used for food that is spoiled. Just image how sick you would get if you ate the spoiled food that is pictured above. In the same way when we speak rotten, unkind, attacking, belittling words to others, we make them sick.

Instead Paul encourages us in a fourth guideline for our speech, “Be Constructive.” Note that instead of unwholesome words they should

  • Good for Edification
  • According to the need of the moment
  • That they may impart grace to those who hear.

This one biblical guideline can revolutionize your communication and drastically improve all of your relationships!

Will you purpose to build up others by your speech, and not make them sick with rotten words?    To do so simply ask yourself:

  • Are my words building others or breaking them?
  • Are my words attacking the person or answering the problem?
  • Are my words even necessary to say?
  • Are my words imparting grace or draining the other person?

When our boys were little, Ephesians 4:29 was a staple in our home. (You know how brothers can fight and say unkind things.)  Please let’s make it staple in all of our homes and church so that our speech heals and builds and instead of making others sick.

Let your speech Be Constructive!

Praise Him Now!
Pastor Jeff
